Andalusia Whiskey Company is located in Blanco, Texas, about an hour’s drive southwest of Austin. The distillery is run by Ty Phelps and Tommy Erwin, former employees of nearby Real Ale Brewing Company. The distillery and tasting room’s exterior is painted a bright blue that contrasts beautifully against the green Texas hill country backdrop. Inside the barn-like structure, which was was built and furnished by Ty, Tommy, and their families, there is a striking mix of reclaimed wood and metal. Comfortable seating, a second story loft, and a striking bar top crafted from a single slab of mesquite wood complete the space. It’s a welcoming, relaxing place to visit, sample handcrafted cocktails and authentic grain to glass Texas whiskey in a serene rural setting.
Andalusia is crafting some of the finest single malt whiskey in the state. They specialize in distilling only single malt whiskey in traditional copper pot stills, and that focused expertise is evident in the quality of their whiskey. They smoke their barley on site – with Irish peat for their Revenant Oak, and a combination of oak, apple, and mesquite woods for Stryker. With a focus on resource conservation, Andalusia sources a significant portion of the water used in whiskey production from a massive onsite rainwater collection system. After the barley has given all it can to the distillation process, the remaining spent grains are recycled as livestock feed.
The unique range of malt whiskies crafted by Andalusia pays homage to Scottish and Irish distilling traditions, while remaining distinctively Texan. Their award winning, hardwood smoked Stryker is backyard BBQ whiskey at its finest. Revenant Oak is lightly peated, and their Triple Distilled is more light, delicate and smooth. Sample the unaged “white whiskey”, which makes for an excellent addition to cocktails – and when visiting the distillery, make sure to try the incredible whiskey filled chocolates!
